Deadline: 15-Aug-2025
The Goethe-Institut invites Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian diaspora artists, curators, and cultural practitioners based in Germany or Southeast Asia to submit their existing artistic works for a mini festival. This open call focuses on contributions that explicitly explore the theme of the Southeast Asian diaspora in Germany. Selection will prioritize innovative approaches, artistic quality, thematic relevance, originality, and the feasibility of presentation and implementation.
The program has involved several stages, including focus group discussions in 2023 and 2024, networking meetings in Germany and Indonesia in 2024, and three upcoming residencies in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam in 2025. While attendance at the festival is optional, one key contributor may be invited to participate in the public program.
The mini festival will showcase outcomes from the residencies alongside five existing artistic contributions that engage with the theme of Diaspora and “Dealing in Distance.” The event aims to reach a broad, art-interested audience in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam toward the end of 2025 or early 2026 and will last two to five days.
Participants will receive up to 1000 EUR to cover production costs, including artist fees and shipping. Selected artists with significant festival contributions may also be granted airfare.
Applications are open to Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian diaspora artists of all disciplines, genders, educational and research backgrounds, and lived experiences, who are based in Germany or Southeast Asia. Applicants can be individuals, duos, or groups aged 18 or older, working in any art form including visuals, performance, film, music, photography, media art, and art projects.
Performances should not exceed the festival’s duration, and installations or sculptures cannot exceed three meters in length due to logistics. Works produced using AI will not be accepted.
A selection panel consisting of Goethe-Institut members and independent jurors with Southeast Asian and diaspora experience will review applications. They will assess submissions based on innovation, artistic merit, thematic alignment, presentation, feasibility, and diversity of backgrounds and topics.
