Pro Helvetia is inviting applications for its New Production Performing Arts Program, which includes digital and hybrid productions. Eligible projects must have a clear connection to Switzerland and be of nationwide importance. They should also be adequately co-funded by other public or private sources and guarantee fair working conditions.
The program targets independent performing arts companies and artists from Switzerland. A connection to Switzerland is established if the production or project is developed or implemented by artists who hold Swiss citizenship or permanent residency and regularly participate in Swiss artistic events. Projects created or implemented by independent groups or cultural institutions based in Switzerland and publicly active there also qualify.
Nationwide relevance is determined by several factors. These include involvement in programs of nationally recognized cultural institutions outside the artists’ own region or abroad, exceptional artistic potential of emerging practitioners, significant contributions to Swiss artistic production and dissemination, and the importance of the project for intercultural exchange among Switzerland’s linguistic regions.
Pro Helvetia will not consider funding requests if the project or part of it has already received federal funding, if it is part of an educational curriculum or training program, if funding is sought for infrastructure, equipment, or operating cultural facilities, or if the project does not depend on Pro Helvetia funding.
The Foundation evaluates projects based on independence, professional competence, social and thematic relevance, adherence to professional standards, and cost-effectiveness relative to the expected impact. A lasting impact is also a key consideration.
The Foundation prioritizes projects that demonstrate a commitment to diversity and ecological responsibility, ensuring that work and production are planned sustainably.
Selection criteria require at least two confirmed venues that pay appropriate fees, including one premiere venue in Switzerland. All participants must be remunerated according to professional association guidelines. Projects should have appropriate co-financing from municipal or cantonal organizations. The assessment process favors projects with strong artistic relevance, high-quality venues, sufficient performance dates, and good touring potential.
Applicants must submit a project description detailing concept and implementation, information about individuals involved, written venue confirmations specifying dates, fees, and services, and a detailed budget and financial plan covering production costs and the first performance series, including inquiries to other funding bodies.
