Deadline: 31-Jul-2025
The Defenders Coalition, in collaboration with the Working Group on Human Rights Defenders, is hosting the Annual Human Rights Defenders Awards to recognize the outstanding and courageous work of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Kenya.
These awards aim to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in the country.
This year’s ceremony will highlight the courage, innovation, and impact of HRDs who often work under difficult and risky circumstances. The event seeks to publicly honor their efforts and bring attention to the critical role they play in defending human dignity and social justice in Kenyan communities.
The objectives of the awards are to acknowledge and uplift the work of HRDs, raise public awareness about their challenges, and encourage the safety and protection of those involved in human rights advocacy.
The initiative also seeks to recognize the contributions of young, emerging HRDs and inspire future generations to join the movement for justice and equality.
There are four award categories: the Upcoming Human Rights Defender of the Year Award, the Human Rights Defender of the Year Award, the Munir Mazrui Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Global Solidarity Award.
These categories are designed to highlight different forms and levels of human rights engagement, from grassroots activism to global impact.
Each award winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000, a personalized plaque, and an invitation as a guest to the 2026 Human Rights Defenders Award ceremony. This recognition not only honors their past efforts but also helps elevate their visibility and strengthen their influence.
Nominations are open to both individuals and organizations. Submissions can be made by filling out an online form, sending an audio or video recording, or calling the organizers directly to record a nomination.
This inclusive approach ensures that voices from all communities can participate.
The selection process will consider several key factors: whether the HRD is community-based, the impact of their work, their support for marginalized groups, and their level of civil courage.
Leadership, innovation, and contributions to a rights-based approach at the county level will also be assessed. The panel will look at future goals, sacrifices made, and the potential visibility the award will bring to support their continued advocacy.
Ultimately, the awards are about more than recognition—they aim to build solidarity, inspire others, and support a growing movement of human rights defenders across Kenya.
