The competition is now in its 31st year of existence and this year they encourage entrants to submit works that are imaginative, transgressive, transcendent, disruptive, boundless and ‘beyond’.
The Sasol New Signatures Art Competition is ‘beyond’ just being another art competition – it is an enabler for emerging artists to not only unsettle societal conventions, but to also expand the possibilities of art.
The Sasol New Signatures competition has been a platform for promoting emerging artists and their work to the art loving public at large. Many of the works now have a proud place in the Sasol art collection.
The winners of this year’s competition will be announced on 26 August, and the Sasol New Signatures exhibition will run from 27 August to 04 October 2020.
Prize Information
- First prize: R100 000 and an opportunity of a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum (Terms and conditions apply).
- Runner-up: R25 000
- Five merit awards: R10 000 each
Eligibility Criteria
- Emerging artists who are 18 years or older who have not yet held a solo exhibition, except for an exhibition which was held for academic purposes.
- Only artists who are permanent residents in South Africa may participate in the competition.
- All entries must be accompanied by the following documentation:
- Completed and signed entry form
- Copy of Identity Document OR Permit of Permanent Residence
- Colour photograph of the work (for reference only)
- Biography of no longer than 250 words
- Conceptual statement/synopsis that outlines the central idea of the work of no longer than 250 words
- Assembly, maintenance and disassembling instructions (if applicable).
Artists are able to submit artworks in all artistic mediums including photography, performance art, video and installations.
