The World Heritage Center, in collaboration with the African World Heritage Fund, is seeking papers to be included in its forthcoming publication entitled: Community Involvement in the Management of World Heritage in Africa.
The main objective of this publication is to publicize endogenous site management practices and share successful experiences with a view to contributing to the improvement of site management and conservation.
This publication will be an opportunity to address issues related to the participation and effective involvement of local communities in the management of Africa’s natural and cultural heritage through case studies on:
- Improving the management and sustainable conservation of World Heritage properties through strengthening the involvement of local communities as well as recognizing and integrating traditional management systems into existing management mechanisms;
- Improving the protection of sites facing various threats through the effective participation of local communities and the development of resilience methods and mechanisms for the sustainable conservation of sites dealing with a number of contemporary challenges (armed conflict, climate change, socio-economic changes, etc.);
- How community participation in the management of a site can contribute to improving the living and living conditions of communities, especially young people and women, while providing benefits for site conservation;
- The development of other initiatives that can promote or contribute to the effective involvement of local communities in the management of natural and cultural heritage.
Particular attention will be paid to contributions based on examples from World Heritage cultural sites in Africa.
Eligible Entities and Application Process
- The Africa Unit of the World Heritage Centre and the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) invite researchers, heritage professionals and, in particular, site managers, to submit a 300-words abstract in English or French in A4 format and clearly indicate the name and affiliation of the author(s) and his/her (their) contact details.
- Authors of the selected abstracts will be notified by June 26 and will be expected to provide their final contribution within three weeks following notification. Each article should not exceed 3,000 words and include relevant illustrations (photos, maps, tables etc).
