The Department for International Development (DFID) is a United Kingdom government department responsible for administering overseas aid. It leads the UK’s work to end extreme poverty. DFID is ending the need for aid by creating jobs, unlocking the potential of girls and women and helping to save lives when humanitarian emergencies hit.
DFID works from its headquarters in London and East Kilbride (near Glasgow) and is supported by 64 overseas offices located in various countries of intervention and support. The values of the Department include ‘ambition and determination to eliminate poverty, diversity and the need to balance work and private life, ability to work effectively with others, desire to listen, learn and create and professionalism and knowledge.’
In its efforts to achieve the set goals, the Department has several funding schemes to support developmental actions around the world in different ways. It has funding schemes for volunteers, international students, private agencies, the media, local governments, educational institutions and NGOs. Most of the funding schemes prioritize African countries.
