The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations is seeking nominations for its conference awards with an aim to recognize individuals, institutions and organizations who have made outstanding achievements in fighting hunger.
Today they are the champions of the Zero Hunger Generation – the first generation with the capacity to end hunger and make food and nutrition security truly universal. The awards were established on the basis of resolutions during the FAO Conference, the organization’s highest governing body.
Award Categories
- R. Sen Award: Recognising the outstanding performance of field officers during country assignments. The B.R Sen Award is presented to field officers who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of countries where they are assigned. A.H. Boerma Award
- H. Boerma Award: For journalists who have successfully steered public attention towards food security topics. In recognition of the important role of the media in the fight against hunger, FAO presents the A.H. Boerma Award to journalists who have brought food security and rural development issues to the attention of civil society.
- Edouard Saouma Award: For institutions that have created true impact in the efficient execution of FAO Projects. The Edouard Saouma Award is presented to a national or regional institution that has implemented with particular efficiency a project funded by FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP).
- Jacques Diouf Award: Best Contribution to Global Food Security. The Jacques Diouf Award is presented biennially to individuals or national/regional institutions that have made a significant contribution to the improvement of global food security.
- Margarita Lizárraga Medal: For exceptional application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Margarita Lizárraga Medal is awarded biennially to a person or organization that has served with distinction in the application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
Funding Information
- R. Sen Award: In addition to an inscribed medal and a scroll describing the field officer’s achievements, the winner is presented with a cash prize of USD 5, 000 during an awards ceremony at FAO headquarters in Rome.
- H. Boerma Award: The Award consists of an inscribed medal, a scroll describing the winner’s achievements and a cash prize of USD 10,000.
- Edouard Saouma Award: The Award consists of an inscribed medal, a scroll describing the winner’s achievements and a cash prize of USD 25, 000. Winners are presented with the award by the Director-General at a special ceremony held during the year of the FAO Conference.
- Jacques Diouf Award: The award consists of an inscribed medal, a scroll describing achievements and a cash prize of USD 25,000. The winners receive their award from the Director-General at a special ceremony held at FAO headquarters during the year of the Conference.
- Margarita Lizárraga Medal: The Award will be in the form of a commemorative metallic medal, which will be inscribed with the name of the person or organization selected, as well as a scroll describing the achievements of the recipient. In addition, a round trip fare to Rome and Daily Subsistence Allowance, at approved UN rates, will be paid to the Award recipient.
