The National Research Foundation (NRF) in collaboration with the Department of Science Technology (DST) is seeking applicants for its International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Mobility Grant and Student Practice 2016 with an aim to facilitate access for South African researchers and PhD students to ICTP research infrastructure, programmes and short/advanced courses; and provide mobility and access support.

- Grant for Hosting ICTP Experts
- Travel Grants for South African PhD Students
Eligibility Criteria
- For Mobility Support for South African Researchers:
- Applicants must illustrate the value to be derived from the visit and the possibility of initiating long-term collaboration.
- The applicant must be in possession of a Doctoral degree and must clearly indicate their preferred theme of research aligned with the above mentioned themes and the identified activities/events in ICTP.
- The proposal should be of scientific and technical merit, and should show potential impact of the research as aligned to national priorities.
- Priority will be given to black and female researchers and applicants based at historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs).
- Grants to be awarded under this category will only cover costs relating to travel (air and ground transport), accommodation and living expenses of the South African researcher.
- Grant for Hosting ICTP Experts
- Visits should be from (an) ICTP expert(s) with institutional and individual scientific relevance.
- The invited expert must be a leader in their field of research.
- The application must illustrate the value to be derived from the visit and the possibility of the start of new initiatives.
- It is obligatory that the invited expert present a public lecture/seminar at the institution, or at a partner institution.
- A copy of the invitation to the visitor(s) and a copy of the provisional acceptance of the invitation from the visitor(s) must be included.
- Awarded grants under this category will only cover costs relating to travel (air and ground transport), accommodation and living expenses of the ICTP expert visiting South Africa.
- For Travel Grants for South African PhD Students
- Applicants should be registered PhD students (supervisors to apply) with any of the South African public higher education institutions (i.e. universities and universities of technology).
- Applicants (i.e. the PhD students) should be South African citizens or permanent residents and not hold any Visa for temporary residency in South Africa.
- They should preferably be registered for a PhD in renewable energy, quantitative biology, high performance computing, astronomy, or mathematical sciences.
- The proposal should be of scientific and technical merit and aligned to their PhD projects.
- Priority will be given to black and female students and students from historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs).
- A letter of support from the institution (i.e. Supervisor or Designated Authority) must be included in the application.
