The MALO Community Grants Program is seeking applications for its designed to support local community groups and organisations engaged in development activities to complement the Australian development partnership with the Government of Samoa.
The program is designed specifically to support small-scale development activities which complement the broader partnership between the Australian High Commission Samoa and the Government of Samoa.
This presents an opportunity to showcase creative, innovative ideas that go beyond routine operations or administrative costs. For example, projects such as installing solar lighting to enhance safety, running disaster-preparedness training for communities, or providing equipment for agricultural co-ops have been supported. The emphasis is on tangible impact, and on projects where Australian or other support is insufficient to meet essential community needs.
Eligible groups can apply for funding of up to SAT40,000, while in exceptional cases proposals may be considered for up to SAT100,000 provided they are well supported. The key is to present a project that demonstrates strong benefit to local communities, with a special focus on vulnerable groups — for instance women and girls, children, people living with disabilities and the elderly.
It is important to note that proposals benefiting individual households, commercial ventures, routine running costs, property purchase, conferences or overseas travel are not eligible. Instead, the focus should be on community benefit, supported by clear project plans and cost quotes. Community groups should prepare strong reference letters or backing from village councils or MPs.
In short, for local organisations in Samoa looking to deliver meaningful change, this grant scheme offers a solid avenue. With well-designed, community-focused projects, there is scope not just for funding but for creating positive outcomes in areas such as gender, disability inclusion, disaster resilience and local economic empowerment.
