UNICEF is now accepting applications for a project that uses sport to empower girls and prevent gender-based violence in São Tomé and Príncipe. The initiative aims to strengthen child and adolescent protection systems through community-based actions that encourage participation, promote gender equality, and use sport as an inclusive and transformative tool.
According to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2019), nearly one in three girls aged 15 to 19 in São Tomé and Príncipe have experienced some form of violence. Many adolescent girls, especially in rural and peri-urban areas, lack access to safe spaces, structured leisure activities, and opportunities for community engagement—factors that hinder their development and protection.
In response, UNICEF plans to form partnerships with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that have experience working with adolescents on gender equality and child protection. These partnerships will support the implementation of a pilot project in one district in São Tomé and the Autonomous Region of Príncipe, with the potential for future expansion.
The project expects to directly engage at least 300 adolescent girls in various activities. It will establish Girls’ Clubs that meet regularly, and train at least two community facilitators per district, including female coaches. One of the project’s key aims is to reduce incidents of harassment and violence in targeted community spaces.
To measure the impact, the project will require monthly reporting and a final report with both qualitative and quantitative results. The implementation is expected to be completed within a six-month period, with clearly defined outcomes and two main outputs—one for the execution of activities and one for project management.
This initiative will be carried out in São Tomé and Príncipe, including the Agua Grande district, with a primary focus on child protection.
