Deadline: 06-Oct-2025
The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund is spearheading an initiative in Slovakia, specifically in Košice and Bratislava, to eliminate and prevent education segregation of Roma children.
With a dedicated funding allocation of 171,000, the program focuses on improving inclusivity in both formal and out-of-school education systems.
The project aims to provide inputs to a comparative EU and international review of best practices in desegregation, ensuring these approaches are adapted and validated for Slovakia’s local context. It will also contribute to research on the national methodology for monitoring risks of educational segregation, helping to test and refine tools that ensure equitable access for Roma children.
Capacity building is a core component of this initiative. UNICEF will support the development of a comprehensive toolkit and coordinate at least three training sessions for national and regional stakeholders, including representatives from all regions. These activities will be complemented by a detailed mapping of stakeholder needs to strengthen their ability to tackle segregation effectively.
Additionally, UNICEF will play a coordinating role in the development of Slovakia’s National Education Desegregation Plan. This will involve organizing consultations with both national and regional stakeholders to gather input, propose actions, and ensure that the plan reflects collective efforts to dismantle segregation practices.
Through efficient communication, project management, and reporting, this initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring equal education opportunities for Roma children and aligning Slovakia with broader European standards on inclusive education.
