The Prince Talal International Prize for Affordable and Clean Energy is awarded every year by the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND). Its goal is to spark innovation and encourage creative solutions that contribute to human development.
This prize reflects AGFUND’s mission to strengthen development efforts and support impactful projects that aim to achieve sustainability and invest in human potential. The award celebrates initiatives that effectively promote human development across various sectors.
The Prize is designed to support outstanding efforts that enhance the concept of human development. It promotes the sharing of successful project experiences and best practices that aim to uplift poor and marginalized communities, especially women and children. It also encourages collaboration and knowledge exchange to address poverty, exclusion, and marginalization.
AGFUND focuses on several key development areas. These include early childhood development, with an emphasis on projects that benefit children and women. Women’s empowerment is also a core focus, recognizing that inclusive development is not possible without women’s active participation.
Another key area is civil society development. AGFUND views civil society as a crucial partner in mobilizing resources and ensuring no one is left behind. Education is also prioritized as a driver of sustainable change, helping build skilled and capable individuals. Additionally, AGFUND supports financial inclusion through its Microfinance Unit, which works to strengthen microfinance institutions in the region.
The total value of the Prince Talal Prize is US$ 1,000,000, divided across four categories. The first category, worth $400,000, is for projects run by UN agencies or international and regional NGOs. The second, worth $300,000, is for national NGOs. The third, at $200,000, targets projects by government entities or social businesses. The fourth, worth $100,000, is for individuals who have initiated and implemented development projects.
Winners receive a cash prize, certificates of recognition, and trophies. The award ceremony is held annually and brings together representatives from local and global development organizations, diplomats, experts, and media. The prize not only honors innovation but also builds a global community committed to sustainable human development.
