The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is inviting applications for Project Title Lot 2: Strengthening the Resilience and Social Reintegration of conflict-affected children and women, including survivors of gender-based violence and those exiting armed groups. The initiative aims to increase access to sustainable and equitable social reintegration services for children and women disassociated from armed groups, alongside other vulnerable children. These services include mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), case management, family tracing, reunification, and additional support.
The project seeks to enhance the capacity of children, families, communities, and partners to participate in transitional justice and reconciliation processes. This engagement is designed to boost resilience, improve social cohesion, and reduce the rejection and stigmatization of former child associates of non-state armed groups (NSAG). Strengthening gender-based violence (GBV) protection mechanisms is also a key focus, aiming to improve prevention and response services, empower women and girls, and promote positive social norm changes.
Additionally, the project aims to increase access to Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) reporting mechanisms to foster accountability. It emphasizes the involvement of men and boys in transforming negative masculinities and eliminating discriminatory gender and social norms, including harmful traditional practices. Increasing access for children and women who have exited armed groups to GBV and PSEA response and prevention services is another priority.
The project focuses on protection sectors including child protection and gender-based violence and will run for one year. It is geographically targeted at Borno in Northeast Nigeria.
Expected results include expanded access to quality SGBV prevention, risk mitigation, and response services addressing social norms and harmful practices affecting children and women in BAY states. Survivors of sexual and gender-based violence will benefit from a comprehensive and coordinated approach to prevention, care, support, recovery, and perpetrator accountability.
The project also aims to strengthen community-based child protection structures and social workforce to identify, document, respond, report, and refer cases for comprehensive management. Children formerly associated with NSAG and other vulnerable children will gain access to timely, effective, sustainable, and inclusive child protection services at the community level across BAY states.
Prevention of and response to violence against children, girls, and women will be enhanced across vocational training institutions, schools, and communities. Conflict-affected children and women, including those exiting armed groups, will receive safe and dignified child protection services.
The project addresses explosive ordnance risks by increasing awareness and safe behavior adoption among children and civilians in high-risk communities. Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions will be delivered to at least 80,000 children and 60,000 community members through schools, child-friendly spaces, and community-based mechanisms.
Selection criteria for applicants include clarity of activities and expected results, cost-effectiveness, local experience and presence, experience working with the UN, and sector expertise.
