Deadline: 14 November 2025
The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a new project initiative in Zambia aimed at strengthening food security, livelihoods, and nutrition across selected regions, including Lusaka and Western Province.
The initiative takes a cross-sectoral approach, focusing on recovery, gender equality, capacity building, and emergency response to create sustainable and inclusive development outcomes for communities most affected by food insecurity and climate challenges.
One of the key objectives of the project is to restore, increase, and diversify crop and livestock production among smallholder farmers. This will be achieved through the adoption of improved agricultural practices, access to quality inputs, and the use of actionable climate and weather information. The project will also support small livestock restocking—particularly with improved goat breeds—to boost productivity, enhance incomes, and build resilience to climate shocks.
Beyond production, the initiative aims to strengthen smallholder farmers’ access to affordable and inclusive financial services, such as savings and credit mechanisms. By improving connections to structured markets and promoting value addition, farmers will be better positioned to achieve economic stability and participate in inclusive market systems. These measures are designed to foster self-reliance and ensure that rural households can sustain their livelihoods even in challenging economic or environmental conditions.
The project also places a strong emphasis on nutrition, focusing on vulnerable groups such as school learners, pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, young children, and persons with disabilities. Through nutrition education, diversified diets, and nutrition-sensitive agricultural approaches, the program seeks to improve dietary diversity and overall health outcomes. Schools will play an integral role in this effort, with activities such as school gardens and poultry production helping to provide fresh, nutrient-rich foods to children and their communities.
By integrating food security, gender equality, and community empowerment, WFP’s initiative in Zambia represents a comprehensive response to both immediate needs and long-term development challenges. It underscores the organization’s commitment to promoting resilience, improving livelihoods, and ensuring that every household has the opportunity to thrive in a more equitable and sustainable food system.
