Deadline: 15-Sep-2025
Auckland Council is accepting applications for the Regional Historic Heritage Grant Programme to support the care and conservation of regional heritage sites. The programme aims to promote best practices through community involvement.
Applications are encouraged for projects that focus on conserving regionally significant historic heritage places, especially those within historic areas or those at risk. Initiatives that address climate change impacts or support the guardianship of Māori cultural heritage are also prioritized.
Grants of up to $50,000 are available. The programme funds projects related to heritage conservation that align with its key outcomes. These include supporting heritage protection regulations, fostering collaboration between stakeholders, making council investment in heritage visible, and encouraging private and community investment in conservation.
Eligible applicants include private landowners, iwi or Māori groups, community groups, trusts, and other organizations working to protect and enhance significant historic heritage places. Projects may take place on public, private, or Māori land. However, places owned by Auckland Council are not eligible, even if maintained by a community group. If a heritage building is community-owned but leased from the council, it remains eligible.
Projects must meet at least one regional significance criterion. This includes being listed in the Auckland Unitary Plan’s Historic Heritage Schedule or other relevant heritage schedules, such as Māori heritage sites, archaeological sites, or notable trees.
The programme does not fund debt repayment, legal or medical costs, religious or political activities, central government services, or physical works requiring statutory consents until all necessary permits are obtained. While grants may be approved in principle, funds will only be released once all conditions are satisfied.
