Deadline: 30-Sep-2025
The American Association of University Women is inviting applications for its American Short-Term Research Publication Grants to promote gender equity in higher education by providing funding that helps women scholars in academia prepare their research manuscripts for publication, ultimately working to increase the number of women with academic tenure.
Scholarly excellence, as demonstrated by academic achievements, original research, recognition from peers, professors, and/or institutions, and other forms of distinction. Research that is original in design and will make significant contributions to the relevant field. Feasibility of plans for manuscript preparation, the proposed timeline, and budget. Applicants’ teaching experience. Active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions or fields of research. Applicants pursuing research in science, technology, engineering, or math fields; or those researching gender issues are preferred. Applicants who have demonstrated resilience in overcoming life challenges beyond their control, such as socioeconomic status, discrimination, limited academic resources, or opportunities or other adverse circumstances are preferred. Applicants who were the first in their family to attain a bachelor’s degree are preferred. Applicants who lead or hail from single parent households are preferred.
The grant amount is $8,000, disbursed in a single payment at the beginning of the award term. Grantees are expected to use the funds to finalize a manuscript for publication. This includes activities such as drafting, editing, or modifying manuscripts, replicating research, and responding to issues from critical review. Funds can also be used to cover living expenses during the award term, including housing, food, and dependent care. Funds may not be used for costs incurred before or after the grant term.
To be eligible, applicants must identify as a woman and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. They must hold one of the specified doctoral degrees, such as a Ph.D., Ed.D., or M.D., or a master’s degree like an M.F.A. or M.P.H. at the time of application. Applicants must also be listed as the sole author, first author, or an author of equivalent significance on their publication. Tenured professors are not eligible.
In addition to a narrative application, applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with their work. They must also provide proof of their highest degree and an official transcript confirming the degree was conferred. If the original documents are not in English, a certified translation is required. If the name on the documents differs from the application, an explanation such as a marriage certificate must be provided. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all required documents are submitted on time. Incomplete applications may still be considered at the discretion of AAUW.
The following are not eligible for the grant: members of the AAUW Board of Directors, employees of AAUW, AAUW Review Panelists, their immediate families, applicants for another national AAUW fellowship or grant in the same year, and previous national AAUW fellowship or grant recipients, with some exceptions. The deadline for applications is 30 September 2025.
