Deadline: 3-Jun-22
The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities (CVC) is looking to build the capacity of CBOs in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia and Grenada in Community Based Tourisms (CBT) over the course of a 2-day workshop.
CBT aims to support local CBOs, so they can transition from the traditional development model they have depended on in the past, based on north to south cooperation, to a more sustainable model that ensures they can continue providing vital services by raising funds through a CBT venture.
Details
The workshop facilitator, in conjunction with the team at SEA Change will design the capacity building program for community-based organizations in each of the three Islands. The agenda should include an introductory course that will provide an opportunity for the participants to learn from selected cases and receive technical knowledge. The course should strongly rely on case studies and concrete examples of activities, events and excursions mounted by community-based groups such as the ones offered on Airbnb experiences and Viator website platforms.
It should be geared at ultimately developing local activities, events and excursions that each CBO would be capable of developing and managing, including practical recommendations for what would be needed to implement them, potential barriers and how to overcome them. This shall be done in a setting that allows exchange of experiences and dialogue between CBOs. The capacity building program should also encourage the establishment of a community-of-learners among the beneficiary CBOs, for continuous exchange of future experiences.
The participants, once they have taken the course, should:
- Understand the key elements involving community-based tourism, and its potential for generating income streams for CBOs.
- Explore a portfolio of feasible ideas for activities, events and excursions that CBO can develop and implement for tourists as an income generation strategy for the CBO. This includes thinking through the necessary strategies to achieve this and building partnerships with other entities including between CBOS, businesses, the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the local authorities etc.
- Be able to apply tools for planning their tourism activities at local level;
- Be aware of the challenges in implementing the activities they are proposing to stage (eg public policies and regulations, promotion, accessibility and transport, local capacity, feasibility studies and marketing) and strategies to address them;
- Be able to decide between the types of activities to be proposed to tourists depending on the specific context;
- Understa nd key elements of how to promote their activities on the Viator site
