Deadline: 19-Oct-2025
The Auckland Council is inviting applications for the Upper Harbour Local Grant, a funding programme designed to strengthen community life and support projects that align with local priorities.
The programme funds initiatives across a wide range of areas, including arts, community development, environment, events, heritage, and sports and recreation. Grant amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis, with the council assessing each application to decide the level of contribution.
The grants support the objectives of the Upper Harbour Local Board Plan 2023, which focuses on people, environment, community, places, and economy. Projects funded under this programme are expected to contribute meaningfully to these areas, delivering outcomes that create positive change for local residents.
Priority is given to initiatives that encourage community participation and wellbeing, bringing people together to foster a sense of identity and belonging. Environmental projects that restore, protect, and enhance the natural environment, reduce pests, and promote sustainability are also highly valued. Family-focused initiatives that strengthen relationships and wellbeing, programmes supporting Māori voices and traditions, and activities that celebrate cultural diversity and support newcomers are particularly welcomed.
The programme also prioritises sport and recreation projects that promote active living for people of all ages and abilities, as well as initiatives that empower underrepresented communities, advocate for accessibility, and foster inclusion. Projects that focus on youth development, mental health, and leadership opportunities are considered especially important for the future of the community.
While the programme is broad in scope, certain applications are considered lower priority. These include requests for salaries and operational costs, applications from schools or churches without clear community benefit, fundraising events for third parties, or applications that request large amounts without seeking other sources of support.
Applicants must ensure that their projects align with at least one of the board’s objectives as outlined in the Upper Harbour Local Board Plan 2023. Preference will be given to initiatives that take place within the Upper Harbour Local Board area or deliver clear benefits to its residents. Unstructured groups applying for more than $1,000 must nominate an umbrella organisation or arrange for funds to be released once a satisfactory accountability report is provided.
Some activities are excluded from funding altogether, such as debt repayment, legal or medical expenses, projects that promote religious or political purposes, and public services already covered by central government. Grants for physical works requiring consents may be awarded in principle, but funds will not be released until all conditions are met.
The Upper Harbour Local Grant provides a valuable opportunity for groups to deliver projects that build stronger communities, enhance the environment, and celebrate cultural and social diversity. By funding community-led initiatives, the programme ensures that residents can work together to create a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable future for Upper Harbour.
