Deadline: 06-Oct-2025
The Biochemical Society is offering funding opportunities to support public engagement and outreach activities that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the wider community.
Up to £1,000 is available for one-off, smaller events which can include: Re-using established activities/resources in a new context or with a new perspective. Development of a new activity or resource for participants. Inspiring workshops or lectures for students, teachers or communities. Development of online content or activities that could be used to engage communities. Community-led activities based on your research interests. Up to £2,500 is available for repeat, scalable and sustainable events which can include: Development of a new activity or resource for groups of participants for sustained use. Series of far-reaching activities for students, teachers or communities beyond your institution that involve continued engagement with participants. Development of a new or expansion of an established engagement event, such as a science or community festival. Sustained community-led activities or engagement based on your research interests that will continue to engage the desired communities or groups. They would love to hear about new ideas and approaches to public engagement and outreach.
The grant is open to all applicants, regardless of Biochemical Society membership or country of residence, provided that the project or activity maintains a molecular bioscience focus. However, funds cannot be used to support multiple applications from the same lead applicant within one round, commercial activities, recruitment-focused events, projects consisting solely of travel or refreshments, staff salaries, insurance, overhead costs, or expenses incurred before an offer letter is received.
Applications will be assessed on the clarity of delivery plans, the potential for long-term benefits, the inclusion of interactive and practical elements, and the effectiveness in communicating molecular bioscience to the intended audience. Different approaches are encouraged for various age groups, ranging from general science for ages 4–7 to molecular biosciences for post-18 participants. Consideration will also be given to the number and diversity of participants reached, the inclusion of underrepresented groups, accessible practices, evaluation strategies, collaborations, career promotion, and the applicant’s prior outreach experience. First-time applicants are welcome and can request support from the Society.
Recipients must ensure that their projects create outputs with wider impact, such as guides, resource packs, published articles, impact evaluations, or training for continued delivery. Reports are required within 12 weeks of the funded activity. All funded projects must acknowledge the Biochemical Society, display its logo and marketing materials at events, and comply with legal, financial, and licensing requirements. Intellectual property from any research generated will remain with the creators, though the Society must be credited as the funder.
