Deadline: 22-Sep-2025
The CIVICUS Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI), in partnership with the Metamorphosis Foundation and the Civic Literacy Initiative, is organizing a regional hackathon to support local digital innovations that expand civic space.
The focus areas of the hackathon are Community Fact-Checking, Secure Organizing Methods, Digital Security, and Youth-Led Campaigning.
The hackathon aims to address real-world challenges civil society organizations face in areas like fact-checking, digital security, and youth campaigning. It seeks to build the capacity of local actors to create and pilot their own solutions, provide funding and mentorship to turn promising ideas into sustainable projects, and foster a regional network of civic tech innovators.
The Metamorphosis Foundation is the lead partner, responsible for project coordination and financial administration, while the Civic Literacy Initiative is the lead contractor, tasked with designing the hackathon content and providing mentorship. The program is funded by the CIVICUS Digital Democracy Initiative.
Five selected teams will receive a comprehensive support package, including a sub-grant of $8,000 to fund the development and piloting of their solution, participation in the in-person hackathon in Bangkok, Thailand (1–5 November 2025), expert mentorship before, during, and after the event, and the opportunity to join a regional network of changemakers.
The in-person hackathon is designed for each team to develop a working prototype of their solution, such as a clickable wireframe, a piece of code, or a process map. After the hackathon, these prototypes will be developed into pilot initiatives tested with real user communities.
This call is open to civil society organizations and activist teams from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Turkey. Only applications from registered civic organizations or informal groups with at least two committed members will be considered. While applications must be submitted in English, prototypes can be developed in native languages.
