Deadline: 20-Aug-2025
Women journalists in Kenya who are eager to explore the potential of AI in storytelling now have an exciting opportunity through the Gender + AI Fellowship. This program, launched by the AWJP and DW Akademie, is designed for journalists interested in learning how AI tools can enhance gender-sensitive reporting, uncover hidden stories, and challenge biases in the media landscape.
The fellowship focuses on the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and gender, particularly how emerging technologies impact women and gender-diverse communities in Kenya. Participants will gain hands-on training in AI literacy, explore how to use AI for data analysis and pattern detection, and learn to amplify underrepresented voices in their reporting.
The program spans four months, from October 2025 to February 2026. It includes online training led by expert journalists and AI professionals, one-on-one mentorship, editorial guidance, and technical support in data analysis and visualization. Fellows will also receive microgrants, editorial and design support, access to AI tools, and a certificate of completion.
Selected participants will work on original journalism projects that spotlight the gendered dimensions of tech policy, data justice, surveillance, access, and inclusion. Their final work will be showcased at a concluding event, offering valuable networking opportunities with media professionals and project partners.
Eligible applicants must be women journalists based in Kenya, either affiliated with a media organization or working as freelancers. Priority is given to applicants from Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley (including Turkana), Central, and Coastal regions. Applicants should have access to a laptop and reliable internet, be proficient in English, and submit a letter of intent to publish from an editor or outlet.
Applicants are required to provide a CV, 1–2 samples of published work, a 300-word story pitch focused on gender and AI, and a motivational statement of up to 500 words. Selection will be based on passion for gender storytelling, originality of the story idea, and commitment to leveraging AI for inclusive journalism. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.
