The World Food Programme (WFP) is leading an important initiative under Component 2 of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) project in Pakistan, specifically targeting Buner and Shangla districts in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
This component focuses on strengthening resilience against climate change through a community-driven, inclusive approach that supports long-term adaptation.
At the heart of this initiative is the development of adaptive capacity within vulnerable communities. By promoting climate-resilient livelihoods and co-developing Local Climate Change Adaptation Plans (LCCAPs), the project aims to equip communities with tools and strategies tailored to their unique environmental and socio-economic contexts. These efforts are being carried out using a community-based participatory planning (CBPP) model, ensuring that all voices—including women and marginalized groups—are included in decision-making.
One of the key goals is to improve local governance and empower community organizations through formalization and capacity building. This is paired with the integration of early warning systems and advanced flood risk modelling, which help guide locally relevant and sustainable climate actions. The project not only focuses on immediate preparedness but also lays the groundwork for long-term disaster risk reduction and adaptive planning across sectors.
By combining inclusive planning, scientific tools, and institutional strengthening, Component 2 of this GCF project sets a strong foundation for safer, more resilient communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
