The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a call for expressions of interest to implement the School Feeding Project in the Logone Oriental Province of Chad, aiming to improve education access, nutrition, and community resilience.
The focus areas include education, nutrition, improvement of access to basic social services, school retention with a special focus on girls, promotion of school feeding based on local production, support to family farming systems, strengthening of local institutions and community capacities, development of agricultural value chains, integration of nutrition and hygiene education, empowerment of women and girls, and promotion of sustainable and inclusive school feeding models.
This initiative responds to Chad’s persistent challenges in education and nutrition. Despite significant government efforts, school coverage remains low, with high dropout rates and strong gender disparities, especially among girls. Malnutrition is also a public health issue affecting children’s learning and school attendance. Since 1978, WFP and the Chadian government have partnered to improve access to quality education through school meals, contributing to better retention rates and learning outcomes.
The 2025–2026 phase will provide regular, quality school meals to children from vulnerable rural households, particularly girls, to encourage school attendance and improve academic performance. It will strengthen local institutions with technical support, deploy inclusive infrastructures, and implement cash transfers targeting girls and children with disabilities to reduce inequalities. Canteen cooks will receive technical assistance and economic empowerment support, while communities will be engaged in school gardens, local supply systems, and sensitization campaigns on nutrition, hygiene, and gender equality.
The project also seeks to integrate nutrition education into schools and promote sustainable food systems by linking canteens with local producers. Management committees, parents’ associations, and mothers’ groups will be supported to enhance governance, while a multisectoral provincial framework will ensure coordination with local education, agriculture, and livestock authorities.
