Deadline: 17-Oct-2025
The Auckland Council is inviting applications for the Waiheke Local Grant, a funding program designed to support a wide variety of projects that strengthen community life and enhance the unique character of Waiheke Island.
With grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, the program funds initiatives in arts, community development, environment, events, heritage, and sports and recreation.
The grant programme is closely aligned with the Waiheke Local Board Plan 2023, which highlights key focus areas including people, the environment, facilities and open spaces, places, and the economy. By linking projects to these priorities, the fund aims to deliver lasting benefits that reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community.
Applicants must ensure their projects align with one of the board’s stated priorities. These include building community capacity and resilience, creating a healthy and supportive society, strengthening collaboration with Māori and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, supporting youth, promoting sustainable living, celebrating cultural history, and restoring and protecting the natural environment. The fund also emphasizes sustainable economic development and tourism, alongside projects that reinforce Waiheke’s identity as both a sanctuary and an arts destination.
Projects that collaborate with other community organizations, are based in the Waiheke Local Board area, use local suppliers, and deliver benefits beyond the applicant group will receive higher priority. New initiatives, capacity-building activities, and projects that support marginalised or vulnerable communities are also strongly encouraged. Lower priority will be given to commercial ventures, sporting uniforms and travel, activities benefiting third parties, or operational costs such as wages and vehicle maintenance.
Grants are open to community groups, environmental groups, and landowners working within the Waiheke Local Board area, with applications accepted for work on both public and private land. For environmental grant rounds, particular emphasis will be placed on material costs such as plants, fencing, and equipment, especially for projects that enhance biodiversity on sites of ecological significance.
The Waiheke Local Grant reflects the board’s commitment to celebrating the island’s identity, protecting its environment, and promoting resilience, creativity, and inclusiveness across the community. By funding a diverse range of initiatives, the program ensures that Waiheke remains a vibrant and sustainable place for its people and future generations.
