The Engagement Award Program is currently accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) for its Capacity Building funding initiative. This program aims to enhance the capacity and skills of patients, families, caregivers, and the wider healthcare community to participate in all stages of patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER).
Funding for selected projects can go up to $300,000, covering all direct and indirect costs. The maximum duration for each project is two years. The goal is to support initiatives that equip non-researchers—such as patients and caregivers—with the tools to engage meaningfully with researchers in patient-centered CER. It also aims to help researchers improve their ability to collaborate with community stakeholders.
The program welcomes applications from previous Engagement Award recipients looking to expand the impact of their earlier capacity-building work. Both nonprofit and for-profit organizations are eligible to apply, provided they are U.S.-based and have a Federal Employer Identification Number. Applicants must also demonstrate their ability to adhere to the standard agreement associated with each funding announcement.
Individual applicants are not eligible. Foreign entities or international branches of U.S. organizations must clearly show how their projects will benefit the U.S. healthcare system and involve U.S.-based patients and stakeholders.
Projects will not be funded if they lack a focus on patient-centered CER, involve cost-effectiveness studies, or aim solely to increase patient engagement in healthcare systems without a research component. Additionally, funding will not be provided for designing or testing healthcare interventions, using medical devices or drugs, creating clinical practice guidelines, or focusing only on quality improvement measures. Projects centered on recruiting for clinical trials are also ineligible.
