The Lewisham Council is requesting applications for its Community Energy Fund to encourage innovative, community-led solutions that address a wide range of environmental challenges from energy efficiency and renewable technologies to sustainable transport and climate adaptation measures.
Small organisations in Lewisham with a commitment to community wellbeing and sustainability now have an exciting opportunity to apply for funding through the Community Energy Fund. This initiative is designed to support innovative, community-led projects that tackle carbon emissions, promote energy efficiency, and deliver direct benefits to local residents.
objectives are Support delivery of renewable energy projects that deliver community benefits Find new ways to support vulnerable residents at risk of fuel poverty and a just transition to a low carbon Lewisham Build capacity and knowledge across community and voluntary groups to engage in climate and energy initiatives Provide funding and inspiration that can leverage wider funding and resources into the delivery of local community energy projects across the Borough.
The fund prioritises collective action to reduce carbon and generate clean energy, as well as projects that are rooted in the community and led by local people. Proposals that raise awareness about energy efficiency, especially among households affected by fuel poverty—such as older adults, low-income families, disabled people, and individuals with long-term health conditions—will be viewed favourably.
Applicants are encouraged to submit ideas that align with ongoing sustainability efforts across the borough while bringing something new to the table. The fund is particularly interested in scalable solutions that could attract additional funding and create long-term environmental impact within Lewisham.
There are three funding streams available. Stream A offers up to £10,000 for feasibility studies and business case development. Stream B supports project implementation with grants covering up to one-third of the capital cost, capped at £25,000. Stream C focuses on education, outreach, and capacity-building efforts, providing up to £5,000 per project.
Eligible applicants include a broad range of groups such as charities, social enterprises, schools, co-operatives, tenants’ associations, and other voluntary or community-based organisations. While individuals are not eligible to apply, groups without the capacity to deliver a project on their own can partner with independent organisations that have the necessary infrastructure to manage the grant.
This fund offers a valuable platform for local groups to play a key role in creating a greener, more energy-efficient Lewisham, while also empowering residents to take meaningful action on climate change.
