Deadline: 19-Sep-2025
The National Geographic Society is seeking applications to fund impactful projects driving science-based solutions to the growing threat of extreme weather events and natural hazards such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, droughts, floods, heatwaves and severe storms.
The objective is to increase adaptability and resilience to these events and demonstrate tangible positive impacts on people and nature. Potentially relevant topic areas could include: Extreme Weather Field Research, which is collecting in-situ meteorological and environmental data from extreme weather events and natural hazards to inform modeling, prediction, rapid response and adaptation; Nature Based Solutions, which is conserving, protecting and restoring ecological systems that naturally increase resilience to extreme weather events and natural hazards or are especially at risk; Technological Solutions, which is developing and leveraging new technologies, including autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence, to improve prediction and response to extreme weather events and natural hazards; and Developing and strengthening local-level strategies, which includes innovative local-level solutions, tools, and approaches to help people and nature prepare for, respond to, and recover from extreme weather events and natural hazards, increasing the resilience of those local communities within their capabilities and priorities.
This opportunity is best suited for individual project leaders with demonstrable experience leading, designing, and implementing science-based solutions to extreme weather events and natural hazards. However, there is no explicit educational or experience requirement, and applicants should demonstrate that they have the expertise, skill, and passion to successfully complete their project. Successful projects will demonstrate sufficient engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that project development and implementation are carried out for at-risk human communities and natural systems. Proposals for both new and ongoing projects will be considered.
Proposals may request up to $50,000 USD in funding for a two-year project. Applicants must be over 18 years of age and not a current National Geographic Society staff member. Applications must be submitted in English, and the primary discipline of the project must be Science. The project budget must align with the National Geographic Society’s budget guidelines, and the project must be completed within two years of receiving the funding. Applicants may only submit one application for this opportunity.
Previous National Geographic Explorers, as well as those new to the community, are welcome to apply. Grant recipients will become members of the National Geographic Explorer Community and gain access to training courses, software tools, equipment loans, and other resources. The deadline for applications is 19 September 2025.
