The Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund offers a valuable funding opportunity for charitable and not‑for‑profit groups working to benefit communities in the Halkirk & District area.
Administered by Foundation Scotland and funded by Whirlwind Renewables, the Fund has been in operation since April 2019, backed by an annual, index‑linked contribution of about £30,000 for the expected 25 year lifetime of the Achlachan Wind Farm.
Grants of up to £10,000 are available. Priority is given to projects located within four kilometres of the wind farm, though the whole Halkirk Community Council area is served. Proposals must come from constituted non‑profit groups or organisations, and need not be registered charities.
To be eligible, projects must contribute to one or more of the Fund’s key outcomes: developing services and facilities; sustaining or creating employment; increasing skills and knowledge; enhancing culture, heritage or the environment; or improving connectivity and transport. Projects that do not directly fit these categories but show strong local support and clear community need may also be considered when funds allow.
Applicants are expected to have consulted with local people and relevant groups about their project proposals and to demonstrate other funding sources have been explored. It is desirable that goods and services be procured locally where possible. Efforts to ensure sustainable development — including minimising environmental impacts and reducing carbon footprint — are expected.
Applications are reviewed by a panel of local residents, many of whom come from within four kilometres of the wind farm. The panel meets four times each year to consider proposals and recommend awards. Groups may apply for more than one project per round, and may hold more than one grant in a year, though they may need to submit monitoring reports from earlier grants before receiving further funding.
For groups seeking to make a positive difference in the Halkirk & District area, especially near the Achlachan Wind Farm, this Fund provides an important chance to support meaningful local projects.
