Deadline: 13-Aug-2025
The Prince Claus Fund invites applications for Cycle 5 of Building Beyond, a multidisciplinary programme for artists and cultural practitioners engaged with spatial practices in urban contexts. The programme supports creative approaches that explore how communities interact with each other and with public space, aiming to create possibilities for collectively imagined urban futures.
Building Beyond brings together nine mid-career creatives with approximately 7 to 15 years of professional experience. These participants will work across various mediums and interpretations of the programme’s theme. The cohort will be supported by three Senior Fellows throughout the nine-month programme, which will run from March to December 2026.
Participants will engage in peer sessions, receive individual feedback, and take part in conversations with guest speakers. The programme includes a mix of online formats and one in-person gathering, called Lab Week, which provides an opportunity for intensive collaboration, workshops, and site-specific experiences in a different city. A collective group project will also be developed to reflect the cohort’s shared experiences and interactions.
The structure begins with introductions and continues through curated chapters, workshops, and sub-group sessions shaped by the Senior Fellows in response to participants’ practices and goals. It concludes with a final online presentation where participants will showcase the evolution of their work and how they plan to develop it further.
Each participant will receive an award of €10,000 to develop the concept they propose in their application. The award can be used flexibly to support the artist’s practice. The Prince Claus Fund also covers travel, visa, and accommodation expenses, though participants are responsible for their own travel insurance.
Eligible applicants must be individual artists or cultural practitioners based in eligible countries across the African continent. Their work should engage with architecture, design, spatial practice, or urban communities. Those without a personal artistic practice, such as arts managers or researchers, are not eligible. Applicants must also have 7–15 years of relevant professional experience and be able to communicate effectively in English.
