Deadline: 30-Nov-2025
The Asia New Zealand Foundation offers to support international travel and fieldwork for researchers undertaking contemporary, forward-looking projects in Asia.
New Zealand researchers now have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to support travel and fieldwork in Asia that strengthens the country’s understanding of key policy areas.
The grants cover research projects that focus on regional and international trade, defence and security, cyber, technology and innovation, politics, public policy and urban development, environment and climate change, and international relations, law and diplomacy.
There are two application rounds each year, and applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Proposals should include clear and sound research objectives and questions, a strong case explaining the timeliness and importance of the research, anticipated outcomes and outputs, and a detailed budget for travel, accommodation, fieldwork, and other research expenses. The application must also explain which parts of Asia the fieldwork will be conducted in and identify the people, institutions, agencies, libraries, or research facilities to be visited.
Eligibility is focused on emerging or early-career researchers who are either New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Applications for retrospective funding will not be considered. Funding of up to $5,000 is specifically intended to support international travel, accommodation, meals, and research-related fieldwork in Asia. It cannot be used for tuition, conference fees, capital assets such as laptops or equipment, or personal expenses like leisure activities and clothing.
On completion of their research, successful applicants will provide a financial report of relevant expenditure as well as a 700–1000-word article with photos that may be published on the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s website. The research does not need to be tied to the completion of a specific qualification, and one-off projects or programmes will also be considered. Successful applicants are expected to share their experiences on returning to New Zealand and remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
Applications are assessed by the Foundation and moderated by external advisors, with applicants receiving a decision within eight weeks of the closing date of the application round.
