Deadline: 10-Oct-2025
The Australian Embassy in Mexico is now inviting applications for development funding through its Direct Aid Program (DAP), offering support for community-based projects.
Designed to support impactful and sustainable initiatives, this program provides financial assistance to non-governmental and civil society organizations working in Mexico.
Each project can receive funding of up to $20,000 AUD, with a higher limit of $30,000 AUD for projects in Cuba. In exceptional cases, proposals may be considered for amounts up to $60,000 AUD, but preference is given to those that fall within the standard funding range. All projects are individually evaluated by the DAP Committee, with a strong focus on need, feasibility, and potential impact.
The program does have firm restrictions on what can and cannot be funded. It does not cover wages, administrative overheads like rent or utilities, international study trips, vehicle purchases (with rare exceptions), or projects that provide direct aid to governments. Other ineligible expenses include business operations, promotional events, and aesthetic improvements that lack development objectives.
However, a limited portion of the budget—up to 10%—may be used for administrative costs directly related to the project, excluding salaries. External contractors may be funded up to 50% of the budget, but only when their work is essential to training or direct care, such as legal assistance or psychosocial support. Local travel costs within the project region may also be covered, provided they stay within the set limits.
Projects must include verified expenses with valid invoices and documentation. Only NGOs, academic institutions, cooperatives, and civil associations legally registered in Mexico.
To apply, interested organizations must first complete an Expression of Interest through the Smarty Grants platform, detailing the project’s objectives, themes, location, and budget. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal, including supporting documentation such as legal registration, tax certification, letters of recommendation, and itemized quotes for the project budget.
If the project involves construction, feasibility studies must be included. For projects working with children or adolescents, child protection policies must also be provided. All bank details must match the organization’s legal documents, or the application will be disqualified.
The DAP offers a valuable opportunity for grassroots organizations to implement development projects that bring lasting benefits to communities across the region. Careful planning, strong documentation, and clear project goals are essential for securing funding under this competitive program.
