The Regional Fund for Digital Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRIDA) is seeking applications for its 2019 Awards to recognize innovative technological solutions with proven social impact in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Award Information
The FRIDA Award consists of a financial contribution of US $ 5,000 plus a scholarship for a representative of the winning project to participate in the Internet Governance Forum 2019 to be held in Berlin, Germany.
Call 2019: Community Networks
- In 2019 FRIDA program will offer a prize for a consolidated initiative with demonstrated impact on Community Networks.
- Community networks offer a way for remote communities, currently unattended, to organize themselves to develop local solutions that allow them to access the Internet. Community networks, in the context of this call, refers to Internet access networks, built and operated by citizens who wish to connect their commune, city or town.
- FRIDA will award a prize to a project or organization that has contributed to the development of community networks in Latin America and the Caribbean through work in one or more of the following areas:
- Innovations in business models for the development and consolidation of community networks
- Technical solutions, including the development of devices and improvements for network management.
- Development of local content to promote an Internet use that responds to relevant and significant needs for new users
- Promotion of regulation that enables and enhances the development of community networks.
- They may apply for organizations working to develop affordable, locally managed community networks that are deploying low-cost creative solutions to bring connectivity to regions without Internet service.
Characteristics
The awarded initiatives will have 3 main characteristics:
- Technological component: In all cases, projects must have a technological component with which they have sought to respond to a social problem.
- Innovation: The solutions used must be innovative, that is, present new strategies, concepts, ideas, methods and processes that respond to social needs and strengthen the communities that seek to serve.
- Proven impact: Initiatives with proven impact will be rewarded. That is, indicators and evidence must be presented that prove the generation of value for the communities that seek to serve.
Criteria
- They may apply for work teams from civil society organizations, public and private universities, state agencies and private enterprises whose activities align with the priorities of the program. Individual applications will not be accepted.
- The entities that apply must be based in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
