The Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Office of Assistance Coordination (NEA/AC) is accepting applications from eligible organizations for its “Leaders for Democracy Fellowships” in order to advance participatory governance and civic engagement in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by providing emerging civic leaders with academic and skill-based training, as well as linkages with program alumni across the region.
Objectives
- Enhance the participants’ ability to address complex local economic, environmental, political, and social challenges through MENA/U.S.-based fellowships;
- Enable participants to assume greater leadership roles in their communities, by developing their skills for effective public discourse, professional collaboration, and project management;
- Cultivate professional ties with U.S. and MENA economic, environmental, political, and social institutions; and
- Create a regional network of diverse, multi-disciplinary, engaged professionals and civic leaders committed to problem solving and community engagement.

- Estimated Award Ceiling: $3,000,000
- Estimated Award Floor: $2,500,000
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants include U.S. non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3); private institutions of higher education; and public or state institutions of higher education.
- Organizations must demonstrate functional and regional experience to effectively manage U.S. and MENA based exchange/fellowship programs that promote civic engagement and participatory governance.
- NEA/AC is committed to an anti-discrimination policy in all of its programs and activities.
