Deadline: 15-Nov-2025
The Wallace Fellowships support scholars studying the historiography and modern impact of the Italian Renaissance from the 19th to the 21st centuries. These fellowships are funded by The Lila Wallace – Reader’s Digest Fund.
Projects may explore a variety of themes, including the interpretation and transformation of the Renaissance in modern times. Topics can range from historiography to how the Renaissance has influenced modern art, architecture, photography, landscape design, literature, music, philosophy, political thought, and museum or collecting history.
This residential fellowship lasts either four or six months, and up to four fellowships are awarded each year.
Fellows receive a monthly grant of USD 5,200, along with a one-time relocation supplement of up to USD 1,800. Applicants should indicate whether they prefer the fall term (September to December) or the winter-spring term (January to June).
Fellows must arrange their own visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health insurance, including for any family members if applicable. It is the fellow’s responsibility to check visa requirements and obtain necessary documents before traveling.
Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application and cannot be pursuing a second doctoral degree. A copy of the PhD certificate must be uploaded. The proposed research may be part of a broader project.
Candidates must be fluent in English and have a working knowledge of Italian. Preference is given to early and mid-career scholars. Research topics may include any aspect of the Renaissance’s influence on disciplines such as history, art, literature, science, religion, and material culture. Most of the research must be feasible to conduct in Florence.
I Tatti encourages applications from scholars of all nationalities and gives special attention to those without consistent access to research facilities in Italy. Applications are reviewed by international experts, who evaluate the strength of the project, its originality, and the applicant’s academic background. They also consider the applicant’s potential to engage positively in the academic community at I Tatti.
Short-term Fellowships can be held only once and are not deferrable. They are intended for scholars who have not held previous positions at I Tatti, except former Graduate Fellows.
Applications must be submitted electronically and can be written in either English or Italian. Applicants may apply for only one type of I Tatti fellowship per academic year.
