The BC Rehab Foundation’s Individual Grant Program provides funding for people with physical disabilities to help cover the cost of equipment. The program sets maximum funding limits for certain items to allow support for as many individuals as possible.
For example, funding limits include $2,500 for a back-up wheelchair, $1,000 for scooters, and $1,000 for lift chairs. The organization funds both new and used equipment and will consider less common devices if they improve an individual’s quality of life and mobility.
Commonly funded items include power and manual wheelchairs, driver’s rehab lessons, custom orthotics, specialized wheelchair seating systems, ramps, portable lift systems, scooters, recreation therapy, walkers, and assistive technology like speech software.
Applications are evaluated based on several factors. Approved requests typically show severe need, lack of access to equipment through other means, and address financial need, type of disability, how the equipment will improve quality of life and independence, and whether other funding options were explored.
Applicants must provide two or more quotes for the equipment and explain how long the equipment will meet their needs. The program does not fund additional equipment that the applicant already owns, except for back-up wheelchairs.
