The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland Galway are inviting law students from programmes in OSCE participating States to register as a team for the first ODIHR Disability Rights Law Moot Court Competition.
The competition is a unique opportunity for law students to deepen their knowledge in the field of disability rights law and develop their research, writing and advocacy skills. Individuals who self-identify as having a disability are especially encouraged to participate.
The Moot Court aims to promote awareness of international human rights law as a tool for advancing the rights of persons with disabilities across all OSCE participating States. It also seeks to showcase the advantages of including persons with disabilities in the justice sector.
Prize Details
- Winners will receive the 2022 Inaugural Disability Rights Moot Court prize certificate.
- Finalists will each receive a certificate of final qualification.
- An individual prize will be awarded for strongest oralist in the final.
- Where interim rounds take place, all teams proceeding to interim rounds will be awarded a certificate of regional qualification. An individual prize will also be awarded for strongest oralist during interim rounds.
Eligibility Criteria
- Any individuals currently enrolled in a programme of study in law in an OSCE participating State are entitled to enter as part of a team representing their institution. This includes both undergraduate and postgraduate (Master’s level) study. Postgraduate research students (PhD level or equivalent) are not eligible to compete, but may act as team mentors
- Individuals enrolled in a mixed programme of study (such as Law and Sociology) are eligible to compete where study of the law forms at least 50% of their module content.
- Individuals should ensure they have the authorisation of the institutions at which they are enrolled to participate in the Moot Court.
- Teams should consist of between 2 and 4 persons.
Criteria
- The competition is conducted entirely in English, therefore, proficiency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite.
- Participants should be enrolled in a law program at undergraduate or postgraduate level in one of the OSCE participating States. There can be only one team per institution.
- Doctoral students (PhD and equivalent) are not eligible to participate.
- Participants should ensure that they have the approval of the institution at which they are enrolled. Participating teams should include a mentor from their institution. If a team cannot provide a mentor from their institution, one may be provided by the organizers.
