Deadline: 19-Sep-2025
The Fundación Academia is inviting applications for its European Research and Mobility Grants aimed at researchers working on their doctoral thesis. This call offers 10 “Carlos V European Award” European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies, following Decree 54/2018. The grants will fund study and documentary research within the European context to prepare papers for the Carlos V European Award Doctoral Seminar on Multidisciplinary Studies on Contemporary Europe, held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste in Spain.
The grants also support the development of research projects under this call, which will later be published in a collective volume by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation with a renowned publisher. Additionally, the funding facilitates the mobility of researchers to conduct their research, participate in the doctoral seminar where they present their work, and attend the publication presentation event.
The topic for this call is “United in diversity: The impact of the European Union on the lives of persons with disabilities.” Specific priorities include the development of European policies, funds, initiatives, or programs; drafting, implementation, and monitoring of EU regulations and legislation; and interinstitutional cooperation among European institutions and international organizations like the UN, UNESCO, NATO, and the Council of Europe.
The call highlights the meaningful consultation and participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in developing these initiatives. It also focuses on cooperation programs that enable local and regional actors—such as municipalities, provinces, and regions—and civil society actors like associations, foundations, networks, and NGOs to contribute to the rights of persons with disabilities.
Promoting dialogue, understanding, collaboration, solidarity, and ensuring the defense of European values, freedom, human rights, equality, justice, the rule of law, stability, and peace are emphasized.
Horizontal priorities include analyzing the European construction process from its origins across political, institutional, and operational domains, relationships between member states and neighbors, accession processes, external relations (especially with Ibero-America), and the development of programs facilitating these relationships through policies of social, cultural, economic, territorial, or political cohesion.
Other focuses are the historical evolution of disability models, from the medical to the social and human rights-based approach established by the United Nations CRPD. The political and institutional relations enabling European countries to advance in implementing the UN CRPD, including the roles of community institutions and organizations, are also considered.
The role of organized civil society—including foundations, associations, NGOs, think tanks, and universities—in fostering cohesion, integration, and European construction is another key area. The media’s role in promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities as equal citizens is also noted.
Each grant amounts to 2,500 EUR, with a total budget of 25,000 EUR for this call. Eligible applicants must meet specific requirements as well as general conditions under the Subsidies Law 6/2011 of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura.
Applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of eligible countries, including EU member states, Western Balkans, Eastern neighbourhood, Southern Mediterranean, Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, the United States and Canada, and certain other regions.
Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program in one of the eligible countries and be preparing a thesis in history, political science, economics, law, social and human sciences, or related fields aligned with the call’s aims. Previous recipients of the “Carlos V European Award” grant are not eligible.
Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of English or Spanish at a B2 CEFR level or higher if neither language is their mother tongue.
Applications must include a completed form and supporting documents such as a valid NIF or passport, permanent resident card if applicable, university doctorate registration slip, academic record, proof of merits, a recommendation letter from the thesis director, and a declaration of commitment.
