The Fundación Academia has announced the Angela Merkel Research and Mobility Grants, aimed at researchers working on their doctoral thesis. This call offers 18 “Carlos V European Award” European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies, in line with Decree 54/2018. The grants support study and documentary research within the European context to prepare papers for the Carlos V European Award Doctoral Seminar on Contemporary Europe, held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste in Spain.
The grants also fund the development of research projects under this call, which will be published in a collective volume by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation with a renowned publisher. Additionally, the funding supports researcher mobility to conduct research, participate in the doctoral seminar, and attend the publication presentation event.
The thematic focus is “The fortune of being united: Securing and strengthening Europe’s cohesion.” Priorities include the historical contribution of European Institutions to European integration, especially regarding European Cohesion. This covers the development of policies, funds, initiatives, and programs; drafting and monitoring EU regulations and legislation; interinstitutional cooperation among European bodies and with international organizations such as the UN, NATO, and UNESCO.
The call also emphasizes cooperation programs involving local and regional actors like municipalities, provinces, civil society organizations, associations, and NGOs. It promotes dialogue, collaboration, solidarity, and defends European values such as freedom, human rights, equality, justice, the rule of law, stability, and peace.
Focus areas include the evolution of policies and mechanisms in European construction and decision-making involving institutions, civil society, and citizens. Topics also cover democracy, human rights, equality, justice, European solidarity policies, European citizenship, treaty reforms, and the functioning of European conventions. The call highlights multilevel cooperation between European institutions and member states, regions, municipalities, businesses, universities, NGOs, and citizens.
Other themes involve social cohesion policies, division of competences, socio-economic development within EU territories, sustainable policies addressing climate change, and reinforced policies on citizen security and protection. The research may also examine European governance and institutional responses to territorial inequalities, crises like COVID-19, wars, economic or migration challenges, and natural disasters. The economic impact of European cohesion policies and programs is another area of interest.
