Deadline: 28-Aug-2025
The DA Young Leaders Programme is designed to develop future South African leaders who will uphold the Democratic Alliance’s vision of One Nation with One Future, grounded in the values of Freedom, Fairness, Opportunity, and Diversity. It aims to shape individuals who can lead in politics and government with integrity and commitment.
In the DA’s envisioned South Africa, every individual will have the chance to live a meaningful life. The country will be dynamic, innovative, and driven by an inclusive economy and capable government that protects the Constitution and guarantees equal opportunity for all, regardless of background or identity.
This programme is open to South Africans aged 18 to 35 who are aligned with the DA’s core values and are passionate about pursuing a career in politics or public service. Participants should be driven to make a positive impact and committed to building a united and fair South Africa.
Over the span of a year, participants will enhance their political understanding, critical thinking, and communication skills. The programme also focuses on leadership and personal development, allowing participants to better understand themselves and their leadership style. Each Young Leader must also carry out a leadership project to grow their influence and emotional maturity.
To be eligible, applicants must be South African citizens aged 18 to 35 with a proven record of leadership and a shared commitment to the DA’s vision. They must currently live in South Africa or be returning before the programme starts. The programme does not cover international travel costs.
Ideal candidates typically show a strong understanding of the DA’s principles and policies, deep interest in South African politics, initiative in leadership roles, and the ability to communicate effectively. Passion for political involvement, self-awareness, maturity, and emotional intelligence are also important traits.
Once the online application is submitted, applicants will receive an automatic confirmation email. Within two working days, they will be notified whether their application package is complete. Those with completed applications must then complete a two-hour online test.
To apply, candidates must complete the full online application form, including two short essays. They must also upload a one-minute video and one reference letter. The reference letter must be written by someone outside the applicant’s family, who can speak to their character and leadership qualities.
The letter should be no more than one page, written within the past six months, and must clearly show the date, the referee’s name, contact information, and relationship to the applicant. It should provide specific examples that demonstrate the applicant’s suitability for the programme.
