Deadline: 06-Aug-2025
The Lysiak-Rudnytsky Ukrainian Studies Programme supports projects in Ukrainian studies for research, educational, cultural institutions, and analytical centres abroad. It aims to deepen international knowledge and understanding of Ukraine and its cultural heritage, mobilize expert knowledge, and promote new and existing research in Ukrainian studies. The programme also seeks to strengthen intercultural and scholarly communication and expand the use of digital technologies in the humanities.
In the long term, the programme plans to integrate knowledge on Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages, literature, history, political science, sociology, and related fields into university curricula. It also intends to extend its reach to experts, policymakers, and media worldwide, facilitate academic exchanges, and increase publications in Ukrainian and Crimean studies.
This year, the programme will support projects that develop and implement university courses, including MOOCs, with priority given to undergraduate and general courses. It will fund research visits, field trips, and summer schools focused on Ukraine, organizing international interdisciplinary conferences, conducting and publishing research on priority topics, and translating specialized academic literature and archival materials from Ukrainian into other languages.
Key topics include epistemic decolonization, rewriting Ukrainian culture and history, Ukraine’s role in European and global contexts, Crimean Tatar studies, the history and culture of Ukraine’s diverse communities, post-1991 independent Ukraine, and the social, cultural, security, political, environmental, and economic resilience in response to the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.
Projects supported by the programme should be completed within 10 months and may receive grants up to $15,000. Eligible costs include translation services, scientific or journalistic article writing, communication support for events, book design, editing and proofreading in foreign languages, oral translation, and printing and distribution abroad.
Ineligible expenses include fees, awards, royalties, license fees, competition document preparation, profit-making expenses, accreditation or membership fees, and payments already funded from other sources.
Eligible projects include creating and implementing university courses, organizing research visits and schools about or in Ukraine, international conferences on Ukraine, conducting and publishing research on priority topics, and translating academic materials from Ukrainian into other languages.
Individuals and legal entities registered in Ukraine or related to aggressor states such as the Russian Federation, Belarus, or Iran, as defined by Ukrainian law, are not eligible to participate. This includes entities with beneficiaries from these countries or those under Ukrainian sanctions.
The programme is open to foreign universities, educational and cultural institutions, think tanks, and individual researchers. Co-financing of up to 30% of total project costs and collaboration with a Ukrainian partner institution are advantageous.
Applications are evaluated based on the relevance of the project topic, the realism and justification of project tasks, budget alignment with project goals, and the applicant’s resources and experience.
Applicants must provide contact details, legal documentation of their organization, and information about any partner institutions involved in the project, along with a project title.
