The ICGEB Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowships offer an exceptional opportunity for early-career researchers to advance their work in life sciences while engaging in global scientific collaboration.
These fellowships enable scientists to pursue postdoctoral research in one of ICGEB’s high-impact laboratories, located in Trieste, Italy; New Delhi, India; or Cape Town, South Africa, fostering both professional growth and international connections.
Applicants must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State and generally cannot pursue fellowships in their country of origin unless they have been working abroad for at least three years. The ideal candidate holds a recent PhD in Life Sciences or has at least three years of postdoctoral-level research experience; preference is given to candidates under the age of 35.
Selected fellows receive a generous monthly stipend that varies by location—up to €2,300 in Trieste, approximately USD 1,749 in New Delhi, and ZAR 25,000 in Cape Town—along with comprehensive coverage of travel expenses, medical insurance, visa or permit application costs, and support for research activities through their host lab’s budget.
The fellowship spans two years, with the possibility of extending to a third year, offering a sustained platform to develop independent research. Accommodation support varies by location: in New Delhi, fellows may stay in a campus guest house for a nominal fee; those in Cape Town receive assistance in arranging housing before arrival; and those in Trieste are provided with a list of trusted local housing options.
The application process begins with reaching out to an ICGEB Group Leader or Principal Investigator to develop a research proposal and seek lab placement. Once endorsed, candidates submit their full CV, PhD certificate, identification document, English proficiency proof (if required), and the written statement from their prospective supervisor. Only one application per candidate is permitted per call, and all submissions require endorsement by the liaison officer in the applicant’s home country.
This fellowship is more than a research grant—it represents a meaningful launchpad for postdoctoral scientists to engage with world-class institutions, gain leadership through collaborative projects, and potentially access follow-up Early Career Research Grants to establish their own programs in their home countries.
