Deadline: 26-Sep-2025
The National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia has opened applications for the Association/Anaesthesia Research Project Grants. These grants support a range of projects including large-scale studies, clinical or laboratory-based research, idea development, observational studies, data collection, quality improvements, and clinical audits. However, small routine local audits are less likely to receive funding. Applicants can request any level of funding, from small equipment purchases to full research fellowships, but all costs must be clearly itemised and justified.
The funding focuses on key areas such as patient safety, innovation, clinical outcomes, education and training, professional issues including guidelines and working conditions, environmental concerns, and network-based audits or quality assurance projects. Typical grant amounts range from up to £10,000 for small projects—particularly for those new to research—to up to £46,000 for larger initiatives.
To be eligible, the research must be conducted within Great Britain or Ireland. Applicants should disclose any existing or pending support from other sources. Salaries for part-time research fellowships and technical staff may be covered. However, basic institutional equipment like computers is generally excluded unless special circumstances apply. Requests for specialised equipment may be considered if supported with proof of expertise, usage plans, and competitive pricing. Any purchased equipment remains the property of the Association during the project and should be used for ongoing research afterwards.
The Association will not fund indirect costs or travel for conferences. If intellectual property arises from the project, it must be shared with the host institution, and this must be approved in advance. Applicants should demonstrate appropriate qualifications and experience. The grant recipient must hold a permanent post, though the lead investigator can be a trainee.
Grant recipients are required to submit annual progress reports through the Researchfish Impact Assessment platform. Failing to do so may result in ineligibility for future funding until the report is submitted.
Applications must be submitted online through the ScholarOne system before the deadline. Applicants should allow time for potential technical issues, especially close to the deadline when the platform experiences high traffic. Submissions must be uploaded as a single PDF file containing all relevant documents, including the application form, CV, signed declarations, and both scientific and lay abstracts.
Applicants must also submit a separate NIAA Grants EDI data capture form by email. No late submissions will be accepted, so it is essential to ensure timely completion and submission. For assistance, applicants are encouraged to contact the organizers well in advance of the deadline.
