Deadline: 17-Nov-2025
The National Science Foundation is inviting proposals for its Centers for Chemical Innovation Program, which supports research centers focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. These centers aim to produce transformative research, foster innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. The program encourages agile structures that can quickly respond to emerging opportunities through enhanced collaborations.
The Centers for Chemical Innovation integrate research with broader impacts, including innovation, education, broadening participation, and informal science communication. Funding supports both the formation and development of new centers (Phase I) and sustained funding for established centers (Phase II).
Phase II centers are expected to implement strategic activities in innovation, higher education and professional development, broadening participation—especially through partnerships with Minority-Serving Institutions—and informal science communication aimed at public audiences.
The anticipated funding for the program is $9.4 million, with up to one new Phase II award providing $4 million per year for five years. Eligible applicants include accredited institutions of higher education in the United States, community colleges, and nonprofit, non-academic organizations such as museums and research laboratories.
Proposals must designate one Principal Investigator affiliated with the submitting organization; co-Principal Investigators are not permitted. Investigators may participate in only one proposal at each stage of submission to avoid conflicts.
If proposals include funding for international branch campuses of U.S. institutions, they must justify the benefits of conducting project activities there and explain why the work cannot be performed at the U.S. campus.
