The Japan Foundation has launched a new grant program aimed at expanding access to Japanese-language education in countries and regions where the Foundation does not have an overseas office.
This initiative supports diverse activities that advance the teaching and learning of the Japanese language, ensuring that educators and institutions in underrepresented regions can receive the resources and recognition needed to grow Japanese-language programs.
The program targets countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Russia, along with other regions without a Japan Foundation presence. Applicants from countries that already host a Japan Foundation office—including major locations across Asia, Europe, and the Americas—are encouraged to apply directly to their local office for other available support. Through this specialized call, the Foundation seeks to close the gap in educational access and outreach for regions with limited institutional links to Japan.
Projects implemented between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, are eligible for support. For salary assistance, applications will be accepted for courses starting within this timeframe, with coverage lasting up to twelve months. The program encourages innovative, well-structured initiatives that demonstrate clear educational outcomes. Projects must not serve political, religious, or commercial purposes, ensuring that funds go directly toward education and cultural exchange.
Grants ranging from 30,000 to 1,200,000 yen. This competitive funding aims to empower local organizations—including Japanese-language teachers’ associations, academic societies, and educational institutions—to strengthen their capacity, reach, and community impact.
Only overseas organizations involved in Japanese-language education may apply; individuals are not eligible. Japanese government agencies, foreign governments, and international organizations are also excluded from eligibility. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to implement their proposed project, comply with local regulations, and possess a valid organizational bank account for grant transfers.
Through this initiative, the Japan Foundation reinforces its global mission to make Japanese language and culture accessible beyond established centers of learning, fostering new opportunities for cross-cultural understanding and educational collaboration worldwide.
