Deadline: 02-Sep-2025
The Forte’s Research Centre Grants offer a significant opportunity for Swedish higher education institutions to establish long-term, high-impact research environments.
These grants are designed to support centres that address critical societal challenges through collaborative, multidisciplinary research, with a strong emphasis on both scientific excellence and real-world relevance.
Each centre selected will receive funding for up to ten years, with an initial six-year commitment and the potential for an additional four years. The programme encourages applicants to create research agendas that are not only ambitious but also grounded in societal needs, allowing for deep exploration and sustainable impact over time.
The call focuses on four thematic areas: women’s health and diseases, care for people living with dementia, strategies for return to work, and severe mental illness. Each area comes with dedicated funding, ranging between SEK 80 million and SEK 120 million, supporting comprehensive and structured research efforts that can lead to meaningful change in Swedish society.
A central expectation of the grant is the integration of societal collaboration into the research process. Applicants are encouraged to involve external partners from the planning phase through to implementation and dissemination. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that research outcomes are both applicable and accessible to the communities they aim to serve.
Leadership and team composition are key factors in the application process. Centres should demonstrate strong leadership and a well-rounded team that includes both senior experts and emerging researchers. Centres may be located at a single university or operate across multiple institutions, provided the collaboration is well-coordinated and coherent.
Decisions will be announced in November, with funding beginning in December. Each organisation can submit one application per theme, and all applicants must meet Forte’s eligibility requirements, including a completed doctoral degree and a clear record of reporting from any previous Forte funding.
This funding opportunity represents a rare chance to build research environments that are designed for the long term. By blending scientific depth with societal engagement, the 2025 Research Centre Grants invite institutions to create research ecosystems that can generate lasting knowledge, influence policy, and contribute meaningfully to public wellbeing.
