The National Endowment for the Humanities is accepting applications for its Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence Program. This program supports the creation of new collaborative humanities research centers focused on understanding AI and its implications for the United States. A center is defined as a sustained collaboration among multiple scholars engaging in two or more related scholarly activities.
Applicants must propose a center with a specific research focus on the social and cultural aspects of AI. The goal is to improve and advance the nation’s leadership in AI through humanities research. Competitive proposals identify a topical, methodological, or disciplinary approach to studying AI and its societal impacts.
The program offers a budget of $2.5 million, with awards up to $500,000 over 36 months and a maximum of $200,000 per year. Applicants may also request up to $250,000 in federal matching funds. By the end of the first year, the project must establish a leadership structure, mission statement, and institutional plan for sustainability. This planning should be included in the work plan.
During the grant period, applicants must produce at least two deliverables. These may include lecture series, workshops, colloquia, summer institutes, digital infrastructure, curriculum development, training courses, multi-authored books, peer-reviewed articles, educational materials, or public-facing articles.
Successful projects may enhance the host institution’s research capacity, foster new collaborations, increase understanding of AI through training and education, and create partnerships with industry, government, and international institutions.
Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, accredited public or nonprofit higher education institutions, state or local governments and agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments based in the United States. Individuals, foreign organizations, and for-profit entities are not eligible to apply.
