The U.S.-Korea Talent Exchange Through Study Abroad program offers a unique opportunity to foster educational collaboration and strengthen ties between the two countries.
This initiative is designed to identify and support exceptional Korean students whose talents and ambitions align with critical U.S. priorities in areas such as STEM, advanced manufacturing, defense technology, energy, and entrepreneurship. By focusing on these key fields, the program seeks to cultivate a future workforce that will contribute to the economic and technological leadership of both nations.
A central feature of the program is the training of Korean educators, guidance counselors, and international program administrators. These individuals participate in a three-day workshop held at the American Diplomacy House in Seoul, where they receive expert guidance on navigating U.S. university admissions processes and effectively supporting qualified students. Following this, participants embark on a ten-day study tour across various U.S. higher education institutions, ranging from four-year universities to community colleges and technical schools in diverse urban and rural environments. This firsthand exposure provides deep insight into the opportunities available within the U.S. education system.
Upon returning to Korea, participants share their newly gained knowledge through presentations and networking events at the American Diplomacy House, American Corners, and other forums. These activities are conducted in collaboration with EducationUSA, enhancing outreach and awareness among Korean students and educators alike. The program also facilitates connections between current participants and alumni from previous embassy-sponsored counselor programs, creating a vibrant network of professionals dedicated to promoting study abroad opportunities.
The overall goal of this program is to build the capacity of Korean high school educators to guide students effectively toward U.S. higher education pathways. It aims to increase understanding of admissions processes, financial aid options, and the wide range of institutions available to international students. By doing so, it supports the recruitment of Korea’s best students to U.S. institutions, thereby contributing to America’s continued economic competitiveness and national security.
With a total funding amount of $120,000 and a performance period of 12 to 15 months, the program covers all necessary costs, including participant travel and lodging, airfare, insurance, workshop materials, and event coordination. Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, think tanks, and governmental bodies. This comprehensive approach ensures that the program can deliver meaningful outcomes, such as enhanced participant knowledge, increased advisory capacity, and strengthened networks to support Korean students interested in studying in the United States.
