The U.S. Embassy in Algeria is pleased to announce Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program that offers foreign English teaching professionals the opportunity to take innovative, online university-level classes and online professional development programming for teachers.
Course Description
- English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is an online course designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of teaching disciplinary content in English.
- This course will help you re-develop your existing courses or create new ones that use English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI).
- Materials include engaging videos, practical readings, and opportunities for collaboration within the course and in your institutions.
- You will identify challenges that faculty and students encounter in EMI classes and develop strategies for successfully helping students learn course content while simultaneously building or refining their English skills.
- In addition, you will gain confidence in teaching in English while you also become more comfortable using pedagogies that are interactive and focus on student learning.
- Topics include course design, syllabi development, lesson, and materials creation, teaching interactively in English, and supporting learning through technology.
- When you complete the course, you will have a portfolio of materials you can use in your own courses. This course is delivered by Ohio University.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a citizen of and reside in the nominating country at the time of the course
- Not hold dual citizenship in the United States
- Have the ability to complete academic work at a U.S. university level
- Have at least 8-10 hours per week to devote to coursework
- Have regular access (4-5 times per week) to a reliable, internet-enabled device
- Have an understanding of English technical terms
- Have basic technology skills related to creating usernames and passwords, using credentials to log in to secured websites, using email, searching the internet, and accessing and managing electronic files (e.g., pdf, MS Word, Excel), including downloading and uploading files.
- Have the ability to type in English well enough to participate in online discussions and submit written assignments in a timely manner
