The Community Matters is accepting applications for the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust to provide post-graduate scholarships and grants for projects that promote international peace, arms control and disarmament through education.
The Peace and Disarmament Education Trust promotes international peace, arms control and disarmament through education. The Trust provides post-graduate scholarships and grants for projects with charitable purposes that will advance or support its objective.
Funding Information
- Depending on individual circumstances:
- up to NZ$14,000 is available for a full year’s work for a Masters research thesis scholarship
- up to NZ$21,000, plus NZ$5000 tuition fees, is available per year for up to three years for a Doctoral thesis scholarship.
What they fund?
- Projects must be for charitable purposes and provide a public benefit.
- There is no limit to the amount an individual or organisation may request in support of a project. Based on the number and quality of requests received, however, the Trust may only be able to provide a contribution towards the project costs.
- Project costs may include salaries directly related to the project’s planning or delivery.
- Requests for post-graduate scholarships should focus on research and thesis writing relevant to the objectives of the Trust and to building knowledge of, and capability relevant to, disarmament and arms control.
- Scholarships are only available for:
- Masters or Doctoral research and thesis writing
- Masters or Doctoral degree studies undertaken at a New Zealand tertiary institution during the period for which the scholarship is sought, except if a specialist subject is not offered or available in New Zealand tertiary institutions.
Results / Outcomes
- Funded projects and scholarships are expected to contribute to greater public awareness and understanding of disarmament, arms control, peace and the resolution of international conflict.
- Grant decisions are based on the likelihood that a completed project, internship, pilot project or thesis will deliver the benefits or outcomes described in the online request.
Eligibility Criteria
- Requests may be submitted by:
- independent not-for-profit organisations or groups based in New Zealand
- New Zealand citizens based in New Zealand or permanent residents based in New Zealand.
- Scholarship requests may be submitted by:
- New Zealand citizens based in New Zealand or permanent residents based in New Zealand who are enrolled, or intend to enroll, in Masters degree (or higher) at a New Zealand tertiary institution during the period that the scholarship is sought. If the specialist subject is not offered or avaliable in a New Zealand tertiary institution the Trust may consider funding study at a non-New Zealand tertiary institution.
- All requests must be made using the online system and submitted by the closing date with any supporting documents needed for your project or scholarship request to be complete. Organisations need to provide supporting documents for both the organisation profile and the request form.
What they don’t fund?
- The Trust will not fund:
- requests for projects or scholarships that do not relate to or align with the objectives of the Trust
- projects to purchase land, buildings, furniture or fittings
- projects intended to generate profits, unless any profits are to be reinvested in the project and its sustainability
- general running costs or day-to-day administration expenses for organisation, such as salaries (unless they are directly related to the project’s planning or delivery), stationery, maintenance and office equipment, including computers
- retrospective projects or projects that have been completed – project costs incurred before the closing date of the funding round are considered to be retrospective
- projects that are contrary to any policy of the New Zealand government.
