Deadline: 31-Aug-2025
The Alfred Kordelin Foundation has announced its applications for the Kordelin Foundation Science Grants to support newly graduated doctors career advancement after completing their doctoral degree.
The grant enables them to work after completion of their doctoral degree to deepen and develop the results of their doctoral work further. They fund work that has societal, scientific, educational or commercial development potential. The applicant can, for instance, pursue co-operation with different businesses or research groups, or the grant can be awarded for starting up their own operation in an innovation incubator, for example.
The work grant is intended for individuals to work full-time, continuously for a certain period of time. The grant is 45,000 euros and is intended for 12–18 months of work. The working grant can include both a working and an expense share, where the expense share can cover, for example, materials and purchased services. The grant also covers occupational pension and occupational accident insurance as well as group life insurance provided through Mela. The grant cannot be applied for solely for expenses.
The grant is available to recent PhD graduates and early-stage post-doctoral researchers whose doctoral degree was awarded no more than two years ago, or to those whose doctoral thesis is nearing completion and have received permission to defend. The grants are not intended for doctoral research or completion of a doctoral thesis. Grants are open to Finnish citizens or private individuals working in Finland who completed their doctoral studies at a Finnish university. Science grants are awarded only to private individuals.
The evaluation of applications is based on the following factors: What kind of scientific, social, cultural or commercial development potential and impact does the work have? How will the work promote the applicant’s career development and what kind of career path is the applicant aiming for? How the results or expertise generated during the work will be utilized after the grant period ends. Applicants are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, internationalization, and networking. Grant applications are evaluated in three pools: Pool 1 Humanities and Pool 2 Natural and technical sciences.
The evaluation of grant applications proceeds in three stages. Experts from the Science Division will evaluate the applications in three pools. Successful applications will be assessed and funding decisions will be prepared at a joint meeting of the pools. The Foundation Board makes the final funding decisions.
The application must include a curriculum vitae, preferably prepared according to the template of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Ethics, a work plan with a maximum length of five pages, a publication list, and a doctoral degree certificate or permission to defend a thesis. Applicants may also submit optional statements, such as from the head of the research group, a partner, or an opponent. Attachments must be named clearly, uploaded in PDF format, and submitted through the grant system as separate files, each with a maximum size of 3 MB. The system will prevent incomplete applications from being submitted until all required information has been provided.
The application period runs from 15 to 31 August 2025, and decisions will be made in November 2025.
